INCUMBENT President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Leodegar Tenga has no intention of running for another term, the former Taifa Stars captain announced on Monday.
This clarification comes in a wake of speculations that Tenga who has served the federation for the past two terms of four years each would consider running again for the third term during the February 24 election.
"No thanks! I do not intend to run for re-election, contrary to frequent sensational and manufactured reports. Several members to the general meeting have also been asking whether I' will stand or not, they should be rest assured that I'will not stand... not at all.
"I've served the TFF for most of my eight years life as a committed president and worked hard to achieve my objectives, which were clear from the very beginning. Our agenda was to build an institution and set up a clear system of operation and ensure passage of a new constitution, which I believe, was a key to transformation.
"I think I've done my part and helped the federation to set up a clear system and structure of organisation. I promised to leave a legacy and hopefully to some extent I've managed to deliver," he said.
He said under his leadership TFF has not only re-written its constitution for it to match with the FIFA statutes, but they have also managed to establish independent organs that can make decisions without the interference of the executives.
"We've also succeeded in increasing the number of members to the general meeting, curb frequent wrangles in football," he said, adding that the task for the coming leaders will be to focus on football development because there is already a workable system in place.
Tenga is one of the best players in Tanzania's history. He has since become a respected administrator and representative, leading TFF as president since 2004.
It's been a successful second term for Tenga, who has worked hard on development projects and increased the level of football in Tanzania and East Africa. He had a spell as Secretary General of the then Football Association of Tanzania (FAT) now TFF between 1988 and 1990 and was a member of the National Sports Council (NSC) from 1990 to 2002 and its Vice-Chairman from 2000 to 2002.
In 2007, Tenga was elected to a four-year term as Chairman of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) and unanimously re-elected to the position during the body's election held in Dar es Salaam in November 2011.Under his leadership, Tanzania climbed from 175th in the FIFA World Ranking at the end of 2004 to 93rd in 2008 and 108th in the run-up to South Africa 2010 World Cup.
Re-elected in 2008, the close watcher of the game has seen his Taifa Stars put together solid qualifying campaigns for the 2008 and 2010 CAF Africa Cup of Nations and a run to the inaugural African Nations Championship (CHAN) final tournament in Abidjan, Ivory Coast 2009.
Tanzania have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup and the only time they graced the Cup of Nations, Tenga was a standout. The national team captain from 1977 to 1981, he led them to a qualification victory over Zambia, who would go on to finish third in the next tournament and to a respectable performance in the final event.
